Weekend Getaway on a Budget – Zagreb!

ZagrebPogled

In the last article from this series we covered Krakow, Poland; how to get there on a budget, where to go and sights to see. Our main goal is to find you the cheapest holiday getaway where you can go away for a weekend to take some stress off university or treat yourself after the completion of your exams! In this article, we will be covering Zagreb, the capital of Croatia!

Often overlooked by tourists with Dubrovnik being the more popular destination, the capital city has plenty to offer. Save the sea and beaches for summer! The capital has a charm of its own, has many fine sights, plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars and a huge selection of accommodation (for all budgets) and is very well connected to the rest of Croatia by train, bus and air.

The city is divided into 3 parts; the thousand-year old Gornji grad (upper town), which contains museums & galleries set in cobbled streets lit by gas lamps; the 19th century Donji grad (lower town) with its shops, restaurants, cafes, theatres and parks; and finally, the modern area of Novi Zagreb (new Zagreb) with high-rise buildings – please note that this area has little to offer to visitors!

Flight Prices

Flight prices will depend on the season that you wish to travel in and how early you book in advance. These prices are based on Friday night departure and Monday return. (It may be worth to take Monday off as you can get a cheaper return on Mondays)

Zagreb has a good flight and other connections to the UK and Europe, so it’s easy to reach and only around 2 hours from the UK, meaning you will have plenty of time and energy to see the sights.

There are a few affordable airlines that can get you to Zagreb and back for around £125 to £150. Cheap flights usually fill up fast for the summer months, so flights will be cheaper in early autumn.

Accommodation Prices

Accommodation prices will vary depending on where you would like to stay; hotels, motels, rent a private room or Airbnb.

Since this weekend getaway guide is for students – you are probably on a student budget, which is why we have only looked up 2 to 3 star hotels (just because we couldn’t find 1 star).

For a group of 4, the average prices for hotel rooms per night range from £16 to £30 and these are rooms with good reviews! Alternatively, hostels are as cheap as £8 a night but you need to consider the hassle and conditions!

We have also looked up Airbnb – there is accommodation available in the town centre for as little as £12.50 per night!

Food, Beverage and Travel Prices

Meal in an inexpensive restaurant – £5

Three course meal for 2 in a mid-range restaurant – £23

Average museum admission – £3.50

Domestic beer (0.5l) – £0.87

One way ticket (public transport) – £1.14

What to visit

After taking a stroll around the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and enjoying the historic old town, Museum lovers will have a field day here. There are several great museums such as the:

Mimara museum – the city’s mega-museum, with almost 4,000 artefacts spanning three millennia, is located in the center of the city and offers a view of rich and varied art of the ancient world –  from the middle ages to the 20th century.

A must visit – the Museum of Broken Relationships is dedicated to failed love relationships. A more alternative and entertaining museum, it exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers, accompanied by brief descriptions reflecting on human relationships.

Plitvice Lakes National Park – Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction is a 2 hour bus ride away, a trip there would cost around £25 pounds including bus return ticket and admission. The national park is a chain of 16 terraced lakes, joined by waterfalls and is surely a stunning place to visit any time of the year.
