There are two costs to you:
1. The student’s allowance
You need to pay a training allowance to the student. This is to cover their basic accommodation and living costs. The amount is up to you, but is typically around £600 to £800 per month, with the average being around £700. It’s often higher in high-cost locations, especially London. As you might expect, generally speaking the higher the allowance – the more students apply, and the more choice you have.
We do not feature unpaid or very low paid placements as we believe this is unfair to students. This is part of our guarantee to our students: all placements will carry a decent training allowance.
Normally there are no NI or minimum wage considerations: Students of British universities, EU students under the Erasmus scheme, and students on the Youth Inaction Programme are outside the UK National Minimum Wage regulations. However you are of course perfectly free to pay them the national minimum wage, or indeed more if you wish to. As previously stated, the higher the allowance – the more students apply.
2. Our fee
Like most recruitment companies, we work on a results-only basis: we only charge a fee for a successful appointment. Our fees vary depending on the payment arrangement you opt for, and the duration of the placement.
In most cases we ask for an initial commitment deposit. This is so that we secure your commitment to our process and to selecting a top quality student in the shortest time possible. Deposits are refundable in full in the event that we fail to present suitable candidates.
Additionally we offer a guarantee in the event that a student leaves, or is asked to leave, for any reason, within the first month.
Placements up to 6m in length:
- This is equivalent to £249 per month for 6 months
- The initial commitment deposit is £249
Placements of 7-12m in length:
- This is equivalent to £199 per month for 12 months
- The initial commitment deposit is £199
In order to keep prices to an absolute minimum we ask for an initial commitment deposit. This is so that we secure your commitment to our process and to selecting a top quality student in the shortest time possible. One deposit is payable per job description and is due for payment with order. Deposits are refundable in full in the event that we fail to present suitable candidates. Then the balance is payable when the student starts with you.
Extensions & Subsequent Employment
Should a candidate remain in a placement or internship any longer than the initially agreed length of time, there will be an ongoing monthly charge of £199 + VAT.
Should a candidate be employed by the company at any time thereafter, we shall charge a standard fee of 12.5% + VAT of the annual basic salary subject to a minimum fee of £2500 (whichever the greater), which will be payable immediately.
- Deposits are fully refundable if we are unable to present at least two suitable candidates* for interview.
- If a candidate leaves within 1 calendar month of starting we will provide at least one more suitable candidate for consideration.
- There is no fee rebate scheme.
A candidate will only be deemed suitable if they fulfill ALL of the following:
- has specifically applied for the role, AND;
- is working towards (or already possesses) a suitable qualification, AND;
- is available for the agreed dates and period, AND;
- has been personally interviewed by us, AND;
- has confirmed their legal status to carry out the role.

Why do we charge a fee?
Placement UK is a commercial business, not a government agency or charity.
And like most commercial recruitment businesses, we work on a purely ‘results-only’ basis: we only get paid if we succeed in placing a student with you.
No hay – no pay, as they say.
However unlike many undergraduate placement agencies, our service is provided FREE to students. We feel this is only right. Many of our competitors charge the students, who can least afford it. We feel that’s not fair.
We provide a high quality and very intensive service that matches companies and undergraduates very well. We use people to do this (not algorithms!). We know this may sound a little quaint and old fashioned, but it still works best that way. And of course it costs money to deliver such a service.
We talk to you to find out exactly what you want. We advertise the vacancy to students and require them to make a specific application. (We don’t just fish them out of a database and hope they are interested). And we personally interview all candidates – to sort the ‘wheat from the chaff’, and find the perfect person for you. We manage the whole process and make it very easy for you. And because we have such extensive contacts and have been around since 2001, we tap into the quantity AND the quality required to satisfy just about any request.
We hope you will agree it’s solid value for money.
